Her History
VARYA was bought from the original owner in 1941 by the Jessop family and owned by them for over 35 years. The Jessop’s have been a prominent yachting family in San Diego, Joe Jessop being the founding Commodore of the San Diego Yacht Club.
From her conception she was known as a very fast boat, consistently winning races in the southern California region into the 1970’s. She was so fast that several rival yachting captains had her lines reconfirmed by measurement over the years, thinking that the vessel had some hidden advantage in speed that had not been properly documented.
Even today, given 12-15 knots of wind the present owners have yet to meet a yacht of similar displacement that can out sail this vessel !

VARYA has been cruised extensively in the British Columbia for the past 23 years by its present owners. She has proven to be a very fast, capable vessel that has been able to handle all types of weather and sea conditions with ease. When rebuilt, the owners had plans to take the vessel off shore so the hull and deck were reinforced with this possibility in mind. Although this adventure did not come to fruition, the knowledge of her hull strength and integrity have given the owners great comfort when caught unexpectedly in the extreme weather and sea conditions sometimes typical of the British Columbia coast.
It would be no exaggeration to state that VARYA is stronger and more comfortable now than when originally built over 70 years ago. Despite her size, this vessel is easily single handed by any reasonably fit person. On or off the wind, regardless of sea state or weather, her balanced helm, combined with mannerly sailing characteristics must be experienced to be fully appreciated.
